Gas gauge works off-and-on

I assume this is what i need?

Level senders can fail, but so can the harness.

Does your gauge stop working at random times or does it consistently drop out at a specific fuel level?

Does it go dead when you've hit a bump or when you've been sitting stationary like in a drive through or at a traffic light?

usually only happens when i leave work and go to start it. gauge doesnt move. shut it off and restart a couple of times and its back. doesnt do it on bumps or while driving at all. only when i go to start it randomly it will happen

Start cleaning grounds. Grounds are easy to rectify, but they will fuck shit up when they lose connection. Could also be (ground, signal, or hot) wires that are frayed or chewed. I don't recall how many wires these senders use. Maybe 2? There's a connector above the driver's side rear wheel. That can corrode too. If your level is inaccurate, I would bet there's corrosion somewhere. Senders work off a resistance level in a potentiometer, so when the impedance of your signal/GRND wire gets effected by corrosion, it will either cut out or be off. My 93 silverado thinks the tank is 1/4 more full than it actually is due to a nick in the wire that corroded over time.

do y oumean grounds at the connection at the tank? i assume dropping it or doing the gen right access door to do that?

There will be a ground for the sender. A ground wire that goes to ground somewhere likely on the frame. I don't know where, my sender always worked on my Jeep. I just had to replace the pump when it failed so no wiring diagnosis was needed. See if you have voltage at the PCM from the sender.

I'm 19 and not too strong. I was able to get the tank down. Access door works too. Truthfully, I'm in the Rust Belt and was able to get the carriage bolts broke free without spinning out. The three towards the front bumper like to spin out and are a bitch to replace. A PO on my Jeep welded carriage bolts to the frame to fix this. Cody, if you see this, major props for that by the way...

Do you have a check engine light or any codes stored? There are separate codes for high and low voltage which can help tell you whether it's open or shorted.

thank you for the info. much helpful.

we will see this weekend what it is.

My dad's car, the needle somehow jumped the E peg and has been stuck for years. The repair shop told him they needed to replace the dash and reprogram it to some ungodly figure. He just fills it up every 250 miles.
