The Lifespan of Large Appliances Is Shrinking

My wife and I are very impressed with and appreciative of all your ingenuity! She says “wow, those Jeep guys!” but caveats it with the assumption that your wives are probably nagging you to get off the damn Jeep forum!
Never!! 😂

I’m gonna put my McGuyver hat on today and see if I can’t apply some of your genius to this little problem … 🤔

Just had to buy a new over the range microwave - of course the new one has a completely different mounting lashup than the old one even though they're both Whirlpool.

Maybe more suitable for “Piss and Moan” but years ago when my company stopped caring about its employees it subcontracted out the tenure awards. I think it was for my 15 year work anniversary I received some quantity of “points” and the pleasure of sifting through thousands of piece of shit “gifts”. Among those gifts was a very specific microwave trim and mount adapter for one particular model of microwave. Not the microwave, mind you. Just the mounting bracket and cabinet trim.
I ordered a camp stove. 8 weeks later they told me it was out of stock. I ended up with a Dewalt bench grinder that I could have got off Amazon for $50 and no headache.
Can you feel the love?!

Don't overlook the option of ripping one out of another unit. My county dump usually has a line of appliances sitting around waiting on the scraper, and people are always listing free scrap appliances on marketplace. Something like that might be a source of free parts.

I hated all that garbage. I did get a spotting scope once, rarely use it but it's better than the binoculars I already had.

My outift gave out some DAMN NICE tenure awards. As you got up in seniority, the gifts became nicer. The last one was "Pick your own up to $500" - I got a $450 book on Lugers - something I NEVER would have spent my own money on. I could probably sell it now for a couple of hundred MORE.

Welp I finally got the 20 year old dryer back up and running. I found these wheels on Amazon. Drilled out the middle to the diameter of the OE ball bearing, sandwiched the ball bearing between two fortunately sized washers, and kept it all together with the mounting bolt and nyloc nut. I didn’t take any pictures installed because I really didn’t think it would work … but, at least for now it’s running a heck of a lot smoother than it was! I was more or less eyeballing getting the bearing hole centered but it sounds pretty darn good.
I earned my beer tonight!

I’m still going to be on the lookout for wheels like this with bearings already installed … this thing is a time bomb.

There’s nothing to lose trying to keep the older stuff running! The newer the unit the bigger piece of trash it is.

My jury rigged dryer drum roller is still working! And I have a backup ready to rock.

A couple months ago the pump motor on our old front loader froze up due to me not knowing you're supposed to clean out the pump strainer assembly every once in a while. Ours was jammed up with debris and hardened detergent. The motor is no bigger than a tennis ball and is only available by buying the whole assembly which includes the pump housing, impeller and strainer screen. On our particular model prices were anywhere from $180 to almost $300. I Googled the part number and a used one came up on ebay for $25. I ordered it and received it in 2 days, it was in excellent condition and it's been working great.

My parents furnished their house with olive green appliances in 1967 after they built their house. The stove was replaced when they remodeled but it was still working. The fridge was moved to the basement at that time to reside next to the olive green washer and dryer. All of these appliances were still working properly when they sold their house in 2020.

Bought a $2500 Kitchen Aid fridge and within one year the compressor failed. After that was repaired under warranty (thank goodness) the ice maker failed.

I have to ask: Why would anyone pay $2500 for a fridge?

Because according to all the appliance guys I've talked to you want to avoid any and all Korean / Asian made fridges and go for the brands like GE, Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid, etc.

Kitchen Aid is the more premium version of Whirlpool. Whereas the Whirlpool has a 1 year warranty, the Kitchen Aid is either 3 or 5 year. Essentially you're paying for a better, longer warranty.

My parents bought a GE fridge with a separate door top freezer (which was top of the line) in 1947. My brother has it on his back porch and it still works. He broke one of the door handles and one of the glass shelves but it still works as designed going on 78 years now! The only repairs it has had over the years are replacement door seals.

If I had known it was going to last so long I would have taken it, my brother tends to be not so careful with stuff. I have the original owner's manual printed in black, white and aqua blue pictures and complete with recipes. Made when America was great.

I was told to also stay away from GE, et al - and stick with the Whirlpool group, for whatever that's worth. But at $850-ish for the last Whirlpool I bought, I'll take the 1 year warranty!

Recently our nearly 20 year old Bosch dishwasher crapped out. Did some internet research and the symptoms pointed to the main control board. Bought a replacement from Bosch for nearly $300, installed it, and that fixed it. Yea! The wife thaought I was a superstar. Remember the quote from the Red Green Show? “If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.”

Brought the old board to work and found a relay had failed. Dagnabbit! I coulda bought a $5 relay and spent the other $295 on Jeep parts.
