On the east coast you have to deal with rust. On the west coast, nobody talks about it, but we have to deal with lichen.

Here in the humid Southeast, we have plenty of that, too.
From an auction I was at yesterday. Leave something sitting for a few years and you wind up with something like this. (that's all lichen, not rust)

Seriously though, I would rather deal with lichen over rust any day.
I like to think it makes us better weldors. Not better than anyone else but better than we would be if we didn't have rust to deal with.
There's probably at least a couple patina fans out there (somewhere) with a LICHIN IS BITCHIN!!!! mindset. Maybe even selling stickers.
I will happily make the trade of rust for lichen. I would have a t-shirt made that said something like "I'm likin' lichen!' or something similarly clever.
