Dead TJ, any thoughts?

Yes, you may not be able to tell before replacing though. I just noticed a difference after replacing. If you pull the actuator pin out you should be able to see the broken piece. Mine was broken in the circled area below (the metal piece not the plastic. I went ahead and changed the ignition switch at the same time but I'm not sure I would do that again.

This is a good video for replacing it.

The video before this in the series is diagnosis of exact issue I have, so that was useful to watch. Covers many of the suggestions in this thread. Thanks for link.

@UKTJ start your diagnosis here. Don't mess with the ignition till you reach it along the circuit

@freedom_in_4low and @Rickyd, my aligator clip leads arrived and I have just carried out the suggested check. The little post connected to the ignition circuit on the starter motor is getting just under 12v when I turn they key. Does this suggest the issue is the new starter motor I fitted only a few months ago has failed already?

What happens when you put b+ to that post? Bypassing the circuit?

beat me to it. that's an easy next move. clip your lead to the little post first, and then touch it to the big post on the starter. (doing it the other order means you have a live conductor that will blow sparks if you accidentally bump it to anything)

This bypasses ALL start protections so make damn sure you have the trans in neutral and the parking brake set, wheels chocked, whatever. Don't take offense if this is all obvious stuff to you, but we have such a wide variety of experience on this forum that I feel like I need to say it because I'd never forgive myself if I gave troubleshooting advice that led to somebody running themselves over with their own Jeep.

Sorry for slow reply. I ended up being pointed to a YouTube video on making some tests on the Starter Motor.

Based on those tests it is pretty clear the Starter Motor has died. A few weeks back I was off road in Wales, at one poiht I got stuck in some muddy water and it looks like that has caused issues with it. I plan to order a replacement, but will alwo open up the Starter Motor to have a look and see if it is possible to clean it up and get it going again. That way I may end up with a useable spare.

Many thanks to all those that provided helpful suggestions.

New Starter Motor arrived (4 days early - gotta love the RockAuto / Fedex combo). All fitted and TJ back in the land of the living. I even had a bit of help swapping the starter motor out...
