Hello Everyone - Noticed the jeep shifting hard in and out of drive (2005 LJ Automatic 42RLE Transmission) so decided it was time to drop the pan and change the transmission fluid and filter. First time doing it and when I dropped the pan there were no large metal shavings, but the color of the fluid surprised me, Not pink, but definitely not transparent at all (Opaque and Maroon). Did some searches and saw some examples of Strawberry Milkshake and wondering all of your thoughts. Wondering if this is obviously the case or not. If so, guess i may be looking for a transmission, and external Rad Cooler.

That definitely has water/coolant in the transmission fluid…

Same thing happened back when I had the 3-speed auto in my TJ. Small pinhole in my transmission fluid cooler in the lower radiator tank was letting coolant into the lines over time…

Both Nissan and toyota had the radiator internal leak issue, but guys who reported in the fluid looked 10 shades lighter and fugly. You might be able to get away with a flush or two and a new rad before the trans is damaged beyond use.

Thank you - may be worth a shot as all I would be out is some ATF+4. Not sure how bad the leak is, but would you recommend swapping the radiator before the flush so nothing new leaks in, or would it be better to leave the old radiator in, do a quick flush, then swap the radiator, and do a second flush with the new radiator?

Put that milkshake in a clear cup and it should separate overnight and you will know if it is coolant. If it is and you need to replace the radiator I would just make sure your coolant doesn’t look like the ATF. Most likely it doesn’t because the coolant is pressurized.

You could bypass the trans cooler.
Then flush the trans. a couple of times, and see if it stays clear.
