Trying to decide on the best tire for all season driving

Is what the tech at tire store said was on certain tires and those Falkens were one he said have such large lugs that they get hot and then one swells out and another in and with them all doing it, you get the vibration at times. He said tell him to rotate and he bets the issue goes away, since it only happens on the fronts. Keep in mind he still said a very good tire....
That's not something I have ever heard of but doesn't mean it isn't true. At any rate, if there is any merit to that, I would not buy them. There are too many great tires out there to deal with something like that

It sounds like she'll be doing almost all on-pavement driving, correct?

Do you own both size wheels already? If so, what tires are already on them? Thinking you could run the best set of tires you already have for 3 seasons and then put a set of snow/ice tires on the other set of wheels for the winter months.

Also, if she hasn't already driven in snow/ice in the TJ, I recommend having her do what I had my kids do: go to a large parking lot after a snow then freeze and learn its limits. Driving a very SWB RWD vehicle requires some experience and nuanced driving on the ice.

Sounds like a vehicle issue and not a tire issue. You must expect a difference compared highway tires but they are by no means aggressive enough to cause "bad steering vibration"
Even a mild-mannered street tire or all terrain can cause a bad steering vibration if the tire is bad, out of round, improperly worn, or improperly balanced.

I only have one set of wheels. Tire shop said these tires are ok, but don't know how much tread is left.....I'm still waiting to get final word on suspension from them and hopefully tread depth to know approx life left in tires. If less than 5000 miles, I'll likely get new tires before winter.

I want to take her out to off road a bit to understand how to use the 4 wheel drive. Her winter driving was in my AWD Yukon XL Denali....not really a good comparison I know. I don't know how this TJ will do, but I know my old CJ5 did better on snow and ice than dry roads. Others have seemed to say similar about their jeeps, but not sure what years, setup, etc.... I will definitely have her go play when the time comes.

Yes, most will be on-pavement. I just know kids tend to be kids and I know full well I would have taken it out to play if it were mine!!

I would agree but pending any error on fabrication, installation or maintenance, I would not believe that particular tire causes any vibration of note

Perfect tires with perfect tire balance jobs don't vibrate. Tires with any kind of a problem can and do vibrate. And the bigger the tire, the less of a problem that will cause it to shake and shimmy. The bigger the tire, the more perfect everything must be.

I have to say?? A tire shop knows exactly how much tread you have they use a tire gauge. ATs can look better than they really are and they will tell you so.
Remind me again, whos TJ is this? :)
Just do a lift and put 33,s on, your Daughter is more interested in social media than tires on a Jeep :)

Hmm, I better go check mine out if that's true.

Ha! I only mention that so people don't say lift it and do this and that!! I know jeeps are top heavy with a better potential to flip. Now i also know i never flipped my cj5 and i probably did dumber stuff than she ever will!!

She could care less about the tires, I'm the one that cares as i want her to be safe.

Another vote for the Falken Wildpeak AT3W’s. I’ve gone for seasons with them and am very happy. I do mostly Highway travel as the TJ is my DD and I have zero vibrations. Quiet tire with great manners. Performs well off road. Good in the rain. No issues in snow of any depth. Mildly aggressive tread I would but then again.

Falken At3w,s, We have had torrential rain over the past 2 weeks in Australia and I cant believe how good these tires are in the wet under heavy braking (idiot drivers) Anyone who comes from a hot dry climate knows the oil left on the road is a death trap when it does rain. I am sold on these tires.
I think 30/9.5s are and odd size? 245/75R/15 are 29.5x9.6 the 255 is 30x10

x2 here! I love my Falkens. I’ve had a couple of sets of KO2s & I like the Falkens much better. I’ve had balancing issues on both sets of KO2s.
