Not sure if this is the right category. If not then let me know.

Hanging out in Hot springs for this weekend and looking for some trails or Forest roads that would be cool to go down. Nothing too crazy just a 2 inch lift with 33s. We are going to go check out hot springs off-road park at some point. Just looking for some other options as well.

Thanks, Mike

Do you have GAIA GPS, there is a lot of routes and tracks of the Ouachitas on there. Also, you can download all the Ouachita MVUM maps on Avenza Maps for free.

I also attached a GPX file from Hot Springs to Oklahoma through the Ouachitas.

I know HSORV park real well, so if you need any info on the park, I may know it.

So we went to the park and had a blast. It was a lot of fun.

On the GAIA GPS app. Do I need to pay the subscription? If so what level. Looks like they offer premium and premium with a outfitter or something like that.
Also when we were in the park. They told us to download the Badge of Honor app and we could get badges for the 3 jeep trails if we did them. So we did that. And then we were offered 6 months of OnX Off-road as a trial.
How does it compare if anyone has used them both.

Thanks

You can use the free Gaia, but the premium allows you to download maps for when you are in areas without cell service (which is pretty much everywhere we want to go). I only use the Gaia for overlanding, and not for anything else. I use trailforks for mt biking and alltrails for hiking, so I usually pay for a year subscription and then when it runs out I don't renew it until I need to use it again.

never used onX, so can't provide any info.

Did you do all three BOH trails at HSORV?

The free version of Gaia doesn't really show any trails and the map isn't accurate when comparing it to the MVUM maps. But NEITHER is the OnX. That's why I was asking.
I do like the OnX has trails that others have submitted highlighted with reviews.
We did Snake and at the end of the day we did Find Run they were a lot of fun. We didn't do Rubicon ridge for a couple reasons. We were solo mainly. But it was like 4pm Sunday when we finished Fun run. Of course we did a lot of other trails in between!

a real shame, because it looks like the more fun end of the trail, but my understanding is the K trail west of the fire watchtower (to Clayton) is closed and private property. Does that gpx file include that closed section or does it have an alternate route?

That gpx file that I attached was not the exact "K-trail", it was just a track through the ouachitas from Clayton to Hot Springs (which included some of the K-trail) and it was done before the west side was blocked off. The K-Trail goes from Clayton to Mena and I believe the west side of the K-trail has always been on private property, however, the landowners recently leased the land to a wind farm and it is now blocked off.

I don't get over to the Oklahoma side of things very often. I do plan on hitting Rugged Mountain Ranch in the near future.

gotcha. I opened it on Google Earth and put it side by side with the Alltrails map of the K trail and I could tell there was some overlap but not total.

I can't say enough how much it SUCKS that they closed the western half. Looking at Earth it looks like the wind farm only takes up a small bit of it so I wonder where the stops are and whether you could bypass the windfarm area and still use some of the trail.

I've never minded wind farms but this might change my mind. I get the need for security but hell, they could have put up some 8' chainlink fence just like they do on a substation; they didn't have to shut down what's probably the best 35 miles of offroad trail in the state.
