In my '04 LJ - Previous owner had oil changed at 89500 miles at a Jeep Dealer and they used 10w30 Mopar with M-090 Mopar filter. Engine was perfectly quiet on cold start. I changed oil at 92500 with Penzoil High Mileage CONVENTIONAL 10w30 and Mopar M-090 filter. No noise after immediately starting to move out of garage, and no noise the second morning I started it. This morning - lifters tapping for about 2-3 minutes before quieting down! Anyone else have this sort of experience?

Yes, with Castrol 5/30 in my 97. Went back to Chevron Supreme and never looked back. The power of BS advertisement.

Does Pennzoil really make a High Mileage CONVENTIONAL 10w30? Their website says the word "conventional" and "traditional" in a couple of places, but when I drill down into the details, every one of them turn out to be a synthetic blend.

matter of fact last trip to wally world had all the "daily driver" white bottles up on the top shelf mostly. trying to find 5/30 I pulled many of them down to see what they were. Some said conventional but some had in smaller letters "synthetic blend" Its getting crazy as you have synthetic, syn high mileage, syn high mileage extended, syn blend, in 15 from different bottlers. Its a sum be'otch if you have dyslexia.

Bad drainback valve in the new filter? Our LJ had some bad tapping after an oil change. Switched the filter to a Motorcraft that I had on hand and all quiet again. In fact, that mopar filter was mostly empty when I spun it off the block. This motor was also perfectly quiet beforehand like yours.

This has nothing to do with your experience but I've found my TJ and our LJ to dislike Mobil 1 HM (a full synthetic), both just noisier overall. I'm doing fills with Rotella T4 10w-30 lately. Has all the vitamins and dinousaurs a 4.0L would love without being overly thick like a 15w-40.

YMMV...

Did not find the word “Synthetic” anywhere on bottle I received!

If you can spell dyslexia correctly, you don't have it!;)

Yes, many people have this same experience. Switching oil types and brands often helps. For example changing from conventional to synthetic or from Valvoline to Quakerstate. It's not anything to really worry about, it wont damage the engine. Next oil change try something different. It is very common on the 4.0.

I am starting to believe they all drain back! Warm your engine before oil change and the filter is full when you remove it, take off the filter cold when its been standing for a day and the filter is almost empty!

The only way you are ever going to know its the oil is if you drop it and put Mopar 10w-30 back in it and it stops.

@brewtus98 please look at this official Pennzoil page for that High Mileage oil. It looks pretty conventional until you scroll down to the comparison list of Pennzoil products.

Interesting! Thanks! I was trying to go conventional and high mileage to prevent RMS leak. It is currently bone dry. My 03 started leaking with synthetic and when I switched to conventional high mileage on that one it stopped almost immediately!

I'm in the same (sinking) boat. Currently leaking on what I thought was conventional oil, but I suspect is a blend. My next oil change will get NAPA brand 10W-30 High Mileage made by Valvoline (verified by @Jerry Bransford ).

But I worry about a year or two from now when all of the oil makers just drop out of conventional oil completely (we're already 95% there). Then what do we do?

Yup if It keeps up that’s the plan!
At least you know what oil came out, I have been chasing engine noises since my first oil change to Conventional 10w-30 after I bought it, In my situation though I am convinced the P/O had it full of additives because it was quiet when I bought it until I did the oil change. 4 oil changes and 5 filters later in a year and a half and no change.

dont you dare use that Q word on this here forum ! I'd use water before I would put that shit in my engine

Don't get attached to the oil brand or type, it really doesn't matter one bit for this engine. Some stuff leaks and some stuff conditions the seals. It is not once size fits all, many people here run synthetic leak free. It's just a crap shoot depending on the seal age, material and what you've used in the past. If there's one thing I've learned from Blackstone, it is that it doesn't matter, you just have to change it.
