I simply wouldn't drive it in the winter if you are worried about rust. No matter how clean you try and keep your vehicle, it's not if, it's when the rust will start.

I did the exact same replacement last fall. My NV was failing and went with a new AX-15 from Novak. Was an easy swap and no regerts (not one letter, LOL!!)

there is a little glare but nothing obnoxious. my goal with the lights is to see more on the sides of the trails so if I have to move them further out, that will help even more with the little glare that is there now.
