Cold start issue on 1997 TJ 4.0 (SOLVED!)

Great news! Glad it worked out for you. I am sure my old PCM also has a bad capacitor. If you are able to repair yours, please post an update. I may try to do the same just to have a spare for the future.

Cold start issue on 1997 TJ 4.0 (SOLVED!)

Good luck gonzvj! Glad this has helped out. One way to really know that the PCM is the issue is to get your Jeep running and up to temperature. Then, remove the problematic PCM and put it in the freezer for about an hour. Put it back into your Jeep and try to start it. If it doesn't start...

4.0 takes 10 seconds to start when cold

Yeah, sounds like a fuel issue. I always like to provide another perspective since I chased my tail for ages thinking mine was a fuel problem. Good luck getting it all resolved.

4.0 takes 10 seconds to start when cold

Any luck with fixing your starting issue? Is it definitely fuel related? I had the same symptoms, and it progressed to about 45 seconds and 4-5 times of turning the key on and off before the Jeep would start. However, once it got to late Spring my problem would disappear until the weather...

Dana 35 Axle Shaft Upgrades: 4340 vs 1541H axle shafts (and why 4340 is not a good choice)

Two years ago I had to get replacement Dana 35 shafts and a set of Alloy USA 4340 shafts were all that I could get in the time I had. In they went. They seemed fine until last weekend when the driver's side shaft sheared off inside my Truetrac. The splines that were outside of the Truetrac...

Jeep wouldn't start, but then it did

Sorry to hear. I had similar issues with a different vehicle years ago. It would act up in wet weather. It turned out that something ate through some wires in my engine and caused all kinds of problems. It was a simple fix once found. I hope yours turns out to be a simple fix as well.

Jeep wouldn't start, but then it did

If you leave your key in the ON position for about a minute or so, will the gauges then begin registering? Or, leave your key in for 30 seconds to a minute, turn it off, and then back to ON. Do the gauges begin working? Don't try and start the Jeep during this test. Just see if your gauges...

Keeping a TJ on the road for 20 years

For the PCM, the place you buy it from will program it to your VIN. Provide them the VIN and they will get you the right PCM for your Jeep. Check out Flag Ship 1 in New York. I just got one from them this week. Works perfectly and looks brand new. Cost was $187 shipped. Not a bad deal...

Cold start issue on 1997 TJ 4.0 (SOLVED!)

Without these forums, I’d be lost. I vow to always post updates whenever I solve an issue. I can’t tell you how many posts I have found that lay out a plan of action, but never get updated with a resolution. So frustrating when going down various TJ rabbit holes.

Cold start issue on 1997 TJ 4.0 (SOLVED!)

I should have updated this thread as I tried different fixes. I replaced the fuel pump over a year ago with a Bosch unit. Didn’t fix anything. Everything I read still pointed to a fuel issue. My mechanic still thought the fuel pump was a problem, so after 5 months, I returned it to Amazon and...

Downstream O2 sensor stuck on my '97 Sport: SOLVED!

I've seen so many posts on different forums for this damn downstream O2 sensor getting stuck in the catalytic converter. It's awful to reach and near impossible to get any leverage. Mine broke off right at the bolt, so I didn't have to deal with any wires. It was just a stub sticking out of...

Rear end moving around in sharp turns

In/out play is normal with the Dana 35, but it should only be about 1/8 inch. My Jeep felt the same as yours and it also clunked, which was the axle play. A shop measured the play at 1/3” on the right and about 5/8” on the left! The axle shaft ends had just worn down over time. It’s a ‘97, so...

Cold start issue on 1997 TJ 4.0 (SOLVED!)

Thanks for the install tips, sinatranate. It's great to know the possible pitfalls on any Jeep repair. I'll just replace the entire assembly, rather than only the regulator. This will be a December project since trails close on Dec 1 around here. I'll put in a new gas tank skid at the same...

Cold start issue on 1997 TJ 4.0 (SOLVED!)

No error codes. I was having evap problems, but I solved those a few months ago. That's actually when this problem got more consistent. Thanks for the link on the fuel pump. I appreciate it.
