I recently posted a gripe about modern vehicles and it just blew up. Clearly we are all frustrated with the path that the modern auto industry has taken. There are theories as to why they have gone in this direction. Some attribute it to incompetence, stupidity, or greed. My theory is that it is all intentional, a push to, through attrition, drive us away from owning and maintaining our own vehicles so that we would all eventually acquiesce to just calling up a government run ride-share to go anywhere, (WEF conspiracy theory at full throttle).

Here is a good rant about Planned obsolescence to planned failure to start it all off. Let's see if it goes anywhere...

That man has a way with words! And what he said is sadly the truth...:(

I think there is more than a little something to this. I also blame the advent of the smartphone - but then again, I blame much of what's wrong in today's world on the existence of that single type of device!

Another thing we could talk about is the hideous styling or "lack of soul" in regard to modern vehicle aesthetics.

Look at the cars of decades past (notably up until the early 70s) and you'll see real inspiring, beautiful designs. Since then automobile design has mostly gone the way of architectural design; bland, soulless, drab, and ugly.

The smartphone offers the illusion of ease and convenience , but it is only a symptom of the human heart feeling entitled . A century ago , the same could be said of the automobile , 40 hr. work week , washer / dryer , and gas range . All of these " gave you more time " to use as your heart desired . It was an illusion then as it is now . Self autonomy runs strong in people .
Nothing is new under the sun.

I was back in the states beginning of the year. I rented a Mazd CX-something, and my mother owns some kind of Subaru SUV.

I noticed when either of those vehicles were parked, they'd often be sitting beside vehicles with other badges - US or Japanese - and it was often nearly impossible to tell the difference. All of the similar models looked alike, very little difference. I hate that.

Most of those other things actually did improve our lives in one fashion or another. The smartphone, not so much.

I had QUITE the battle a number of years ago over the 40 hr. week - or the 8 hour workday to be more precise. Management was stuffing a horrid thing called "9/80" down everyone's throats. I raised so much holy Hell that they made me exempt from it!

We have a newer Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid. I drove to the in-laws today at 27 F we got 22 mpg.

We are required to have a dealer change oil every other time or it's voids the waranty. When we got off the interstate it sounded like a brake was dragging. I couldn't find it so we drove the last two miles. I was able to crawl under and it was the engine splash shield hanging down. The dealer changed the oil and put one of the 4 bolts back in to hold it up. So one end finally dropped far enough to touch the ground. Probably voided my waranty with me finding a couple non-dealer supplied bolts to put it back up.

I know it didn't scrape the whole 165 miles because it just had a little of the edge scratched up.

I have a pile of tech complaints about it. Nothing that affects the operation, just constant annoying alarms and trying to take control.

One tiny failure will put the whole vehicle out of commission or into limp mode. For example faulty DEF sensors.

A coworker’s vehicle wouldn’t start, had to be rollback transported to the dealership, and eventually had a complete transmission replacement for a failed gear position sensor deep in the trans. All for a sensor that prevents starting the engine unless the computer sees the transmission is in Park.

On another vehicle forum, someone reported one brand of vehicles wouldn’t start if a backup proximity sensor failure.

Those bottom engine covers are a pain in the ass.

We are renting a 2025 Buick suv of some sort.
Here's a list of all the assisted driving nannies I just had to turn off on our rental vehicle:
Forward collision avoidance
Front pedestrian braking
Intersection collision braking
Side bicyclist alert
Lane change alert
Park assist with braking
Rear cross traffic braking
rear pedestrian alert

That is pretty crappy mpgs for a newer car of that size.

Hey , on a unrelated note , are you driving that Bimmer yet ?
And Happy Thanksgiving to you IBaskit !

I have been yes, it drives great! It gets better mpgs than a hybrid Santa fe apparently, I got 27.4mpg round trip 150mi (which includes going up and down a pass, it gets like low 30s on flatter highway).

Doesn't have any of these whiny nanny features. Headlights turn with the steering wheel which is cool AF lol.

Happy thanksgiving to you too!!

Last night driving back we got 22.5 mpg. So it definately doesn't do well below 30F. We normally get 30 mpg interstate 32+ in town.

The windows would fog over, so just change the system to blow on the front window, right. Then cold air would come out of the other vents. Change it to blow out of other vents and they blow hot but all the window fog up.

On top of that, it's like the dual climate zone could never figure out how to get to the temperature setting and kept pumping cold or hot air randomly. I don't remember it doing that last year.

I wonder if it uses the batteries to heat rather than the engine.

"Russian Porsche owners' cars are immobilised across the country - with 'deliberate' satellite interference feared"

Another solution to a problem that never existed. Porsches across Russia are not starting and satellite interference is a likely culprit.

Now, before some Ukraine booster has something smart to say about politics or how it serves the Russians right or some other such tripe (some folks can't help but drag politics into any discussion), this is not a political issue; it can and will happen to any modern vehicle that has an internet or satellite connection.

If you don't care to read the report, it goes to say:
... vehicles have suddenly locked up, lost power and refused to start, as owners and dealerships warn of a growing wave of failures that has left hundreds of vehicles stuck in place. The nationwide meltdown hit Porsche models built since 2013, which are all fitted with the brand's factory VTS satellite-security unit. ... The vehicles have been 'bricked' with their engines immobilised, due to connections with the satellite system being lost. ... Rolf dealership service director Yulia Trushkova said 'all models and all engine types' are impacted. The company does not rule out that the malfunction may have been caused 'deliberately', according to sources in Moscow - with suspicions cast towards the West.
Not much more to say about this. IYKYK.

I reiterate - for those who still don't get it - that this has nothing to do with incompetence; it is part of a larger plan. It is about control and breaking down our will to control our own lives and our own destiny, and forcing out of the free market economy where we can determine what we want to own and how we want to live.

YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND BE HAPPY, YOU STINKING PLEBE!!!!
