Found limits of departure angle, need new tailgate

Part of why I leave a cheap Amazon aluminum hitch recovery ring on the back of mine. Not perfect but it helps. I need to get my tire closer to my tailgate.

same...I pulled out my M18 impact to drop the spare and their minds = blown
Battery tools are certainly far better than the old days. We were out with Jerry one time and a tire on a rig needed to come off. Jerry went back to his monster portable garage to dig out the air impact, air hose, and find the socket for the lug nuts. By the time he got it all found, plugged in, and powered up the York, I had removed the folding 4-way lug wrench from beside the seat and had all the lugnuts off.

This sounds like the ticket,as long as it extends past the spare

In my Jeep, in the last pin hole it's about an inch inside of my 12.50 spare. It works just fine for me. Sometimes I run it with a 6 inch extender, but that's really just for parking lots to keep people from pulling up so close.

I leave a 2" ball hitch upside down in the receiver. It tucks up by the tire and has taken some pretty hard hits. Wouldn't work with a 35 though

This is starting to read like an XJ forum.

I put mine vertical to one side but that's basically how I finished the trip.

This is the way. Laying it flat probably would fit, but it makes your remaining cargo space much more difficult to use - it’s not easy to stack things on top of a spare. Standing up behind the driver’s seat has been my go-to for efficient use of space. It leaves ~2/3 the width of the cargo area ready to use and accessible with only the tailgate open, which is a plus for soft-top users who don’t have a liftgate.

Do you have a pic?

I assumed you want a profile pic. 12.50 tire on what's probably a 3.75 backspaced wheel. As is it works well when riding. With mounted with a 6" extension its too long for trails, but just right for ass holes in parking lots. I run one on my truck for that very reason.

It would be nice to remove the spare, but like most of you, I tend to be one of the more prepared in my group. So I carry a plug kit, GlueTread, valve stems and a spare. Last year I used everything but the plug kit in one trip for a guy that sliced both tires on the passenger side. The glue tread wouldn't stick (applied by another jeeper) but we went through 2 packs and ended up using his spare 33 and my spare 35 to get him out of the back woods. Only bolt patterns in the group that would fit. He was stuck in 2 WD for the trip out but he got out.

I lightly bent my tailgate (the top corners that I could correct with a crescent wrench and cardboard) on a steep climb back when I was on 33s, that was enough to know the tire had to move. I keep my back seat in for around town but the tire in the bed when wheeling, however the back seat is used less and less - so a permanent platform solution might need to be in the works.

Adding a hitch with a skid or ramp or wheel is just going to decrease your approach and/or departure angle.

Yes, but that's only an issue if your trying to push limits and don't mind damage. If you want to protect body panels, keeping the body away from things when departing is necessary. ;)

Also, this situation was my original purpose for purchasing a couple of the hitch mounted skids. If they want to get that close, let them take the damage.

At this point in the thread, it appears that’s what everybody is trying to do. 🤣

I see two camps.

-Remove your spare because you wheel sketchy stuff and

-I occasionally get in trouble but still want a spare on my daily driver and a tailgate that isn't taco'd.

You don't usually find the daily driver crowd belittling the big tire guys. But you do see the inverse pretty often

It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand.

SWEET! That is the best looking Honda bumper I've seen.
I going to start putting the ball mount back on my pickup full time.

I don't push the LJ into real rough areas but after this thread I am adding a long ball mount. I know that spare has been real close a few times.
