Anyone install hood vents?

I have did the genright ones. I bought all 5, but only ended up installing 3 of them. Idk if they help with cooling at all, but I like the look.

Nice work. How long have you had them on? My worry would be issues with water from heavy rain — the passenger side vent's close to the fuse box. (??)

Here in South Florida Surface-of-the-Sun Land, temps are brutal, obviously (and most of the country). My Stant is a 195°. Recently upgraded the fan to a SPAL 16" puller at 2500 CFMs — it kicks in when the needle hits 210 — cools things down quickly.

Anybody want to stick a grid of tell-tales on their hood/cowl and record a real world drive for science? Maybe someone can prove or disprove this graphic, and show what is actually going on.

I have searched high and low for the guys write up. He did a very good job using sensors under the hood. It was an old wright up 5 years ago and I can only imagine he stopped the blog and took down the site.

I can find links all day but it was about as old as this one. I do not think this was it. Weird that All the old ideas were to put side vents on and than everyone saw more profit in the center vents and started selling vents for looks over function.

I have a Poison Spyder vent and it had been though several heavy storms. Both while driving and sitting in the storm. While driving, I had zero issues. Sometime while at work we would get major downpours and it could sit for potentially 12 hour there before I left. The only thing I’ve ever noticed, and this had only been when it sits in the rain, the belt may squeak on initial start up for just a second. Other than that, no issues.

There is potential to get water in there with the stock hood while driving or if you off road and cross deep water I guess. Obviously not as much having vent holes above it though.

My main reason to install it was to try to lower underhood temps (not engine running temps). My thinking was there is a lot of rubber and plastic and a computer under there that seemed to get much much hotter under the hood than any of my other vehicles. I’ve had it installed since 2017, I believe.

I have the same set up and have had them installed for almost a year. I've had no issues with water. My TJ parks outside 98% of the time.

I have been able to tell a huge difference in ITA temps as well as hood temps. I can grab the hood in the middle of the summer and open it without gloves. A couple days ago I drove the TJ before I changed the oil. It had snow/ice build up on the hood. The hood vents thawed and cleared off a lot faster than the whole hood.

Same. I have the Poison Spyder knockoff (sans logo) installed and it lowered my IATs a noticeable amount. I have zero concerns driving in heavy rain.

We open our hoods near where the diagram tells us temps get the hottest. With the big louver installed, I can hold the hood in the same front area that was previously scolding hot to the touch. That, along with lowered intake temps, likely means the big louver does something.

My TJ came with one otherwise I would not have done this. The other, often over looked downside other than the big opening in your hood is that your wiper fluid nozzle is gone. I cut a hold in the hood vent (irony not lost on me that I cut a hole in the thing that has a hole in my hood) so I could have one again to pass safety inspection.

I'm so glad to have it in winter. EVERYTHING gets kick up onto the windshield.

sounds like you got the Hoisin Chyna vents

right here

Is that your Jeep? The center was doing what I expected, tumbling, a little dead, but the outside looked to be pretty boundary stable and like air would flow out of those vents. I can't see the front. If that is your Jeep, would you be interested in doing it again, but with the vents taped off to represent a stock hood?

Also, those at the cowl show just how well the cowl vent is located.

any chance the poison spder one is available to sell?

Don't think it would be worth the cost of exporting from the UK to canada, If i still have it you will need to strip off the old raptor liner and purchase new bolts or rivets along with obtaining the cutting template. you would be better off just getting an offbrand one

It is my jeep, maybe I'll do this tomorrow.

interesting study, thanks for sharing. basically, I'll be installing a merely aestethics upgrade then :D
I found the 'offgrid' hood vent, which seems cool.
keep you posted once it arrives!

Oman4x4 was inspiration for this mod and my others as he was the first to document on his blog almost 20 years ago now many mods people have forgotten today. Luckily his site is still available on the Wayback Machine as well as another lost legend Stu-Offroad. A lot of their info is on older Jeep forums as well but it takes a lot more digging to find. Here is another pic of a TJ with hood vents I had that hadn't been shown here already. Appears to be a generic Posion Spider copy and Ikon Motorsports 20" universal vents.
