Another reason to hate modern vehicles; your car is spying on you

Between GPS tracking, "infotainment," and a myriad other technological "innovations," modern vehicles have been turned into data collection devices.

Automobiles today are giant rolling sensors, from the tires to the entertainment system, tracking not only your driving habits but recording personal information about you, completely unrelated to driving.

Experts call them a "privacy nightmare."

New cars can collect more data about you than anything else you own, including your cell phone, and for good reason. Driver data has been valued at $400 billion.

"The saying in Silicon Valley is, 'If you're not paying for the product, you're the product.' But what's strange with cars is that the average new car costs almost $50,000. You're still the product,"

I came across a couple of CJs for sale today and was joking with my wife about buying one. She seriously said, Do it!

Maybe not a bad idea.

They're also hurting people financially. Been thinking about this. The whole reason I learned to wrench on cars is because I was a broke arse kid. And could buy a cheap car and fix it.

Now 10yr old cars are so complicated you can't easily fix them and repairs are getting absurd. They're trying to ruin the secondary markets so your options are to pay the dealer or buy a new car and get into the ever revolving debt cycle of car payments.

Its not as simple as pulling a fuse

Im currently set to remove the OnStar daughter board in my C7 vette and removing the fuse shuts off the radio features and also microphone for phone calls. So that isnt the correct way

I.e.

Yes folks, all modern vehicles for the most part are smart surveillance machines. MANY now have a form of telematics because the data collection is a huge revenue generator.

GM was sued because they were selling all locations, speeds , etc to insurance agencies amongst other thing

Also my buddy that sold me the Jeep is a State Dept contractor abroad (CIA/embassies) they have data sheets on how to disable uparmored GM, Toyota etc vehicles GPS because foreign agencies can get into those vehicles and ID safehouses from the GPS records onboard the vehicles

Samething local police do on investigations to see if your alibi lines up. Even if you disable telematics and GPS, your bluetooth radio is tracking every signal it comes into contact with and uploads it via your smartphone

yes its pretty entrenched
Most people will be shocked and awed but too lazy to do anything about it. C’est la vie

On Fords you can pull the fuse. You won’t get over the air updates or be able to use the phone app. Other than that it works just fine.

Data is stored in the vehicle but it would require physical connection to download it.

What I like-d about Ford, is they didnt bend the knee to big Gubmint surveillance until decades later. I dont know what year they finally began adding telematics , but it seems around the sametime even foreign vehicles did

If they truly kept it simple to disable beyond 2020 Id applaud that also. Just sucks to see all of these companies doing this

I wont buy new ever again
I need to figure out how to disable our Infiniti QX80

I have always wondered if you could just disconnect the RF antenna to prevent data transfer. Dunno if the system would detect that and react unkindly.
I don’t have a vehicle new enough for all that.

Your bluetooth connected phone has back channels
these people were not dumb, trust me

Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay are also NOT your friend

They also made that wireless to keep you connected and reporting obliviously.
It wasnt for your benefit or convenience

This is also why manufacturers removed the age old single and double DIN stereos in favor of proprietary dash tablets. Keeps you on their terms of connected status. Even aftermarket replacements are all signals intelligence liabilities

For Spotify and Pandora users, the market has recognized the desire to go back to iPod technology and stop the 24/7 connection and phone addictions. Thats what Im goin back to also
