North Carolina List of Carolinian off-roaders

I'm not going to make it to Brown Mt this week, but I do intend to try it out soon. We did make it to Uwharrie yesterday. Not crowded and wet enough to keep the dust down. There are a few very easy trails there if you're looking to get out and make a last day run tomorrow.

Not going to make it out today.....likely finish my break in on the SCAR trails close to my house and then be ready to rock and roll come Uwharrie opening back up

I'm thinking about a day trip to Uwharrie but I am rather inexperienced. My build thread is here: https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/john’s-consistently-inconsistent-lj-build.82782/

If that's too much to read, I have a 2005 LJ with a 4" SL, 1.25" BL, tummy tuck, winch, and SwayLOC on 33s. I do not have lockers installed (they're in boxes along with the rest of the supplies for the regear I'll do this winter).

My offroad experience (not counting time in the 1980s on a three-wheeler) is mostly poorly maintained dirt roads in 2WD pickups and a day trip on some roads/trails at Fort Bragg in the Jeep.

I'm trying to convince my brother-in-law to go with me in his '79 scout so I won't be alone, but that may not be the case. His experience level is probably about the same as mine. They're in Charlotte and we're in Fayetteville, so it's not too much of a drive for either of us.

What trails are appropriate for a novice? How bypassable are the obstacles on the harder trails? I'd like to explore, but I'd also like to watch others negotiate some of the harder obstacles. I've looked at the trails in onX and watched maybe a dozen videos.

I could also go with folks on the local FB Jeep group that frequently post about meetups, but I don't want to slow anyone down.

Happy to join / sure others will as well.

The 3 Ds are the where the hard stuff is. (Dicky, Daniel, Dutch John) Daniel is the hardest at Uwharrie. Stay away from the face, but you can ride up the backside from the loop. Your Jeep will be more capable than you are confident. Most of the big obstacles have a bypass of some type.

I'm under an hour drive. Let us know when you want to go and I might join you. I prefer weekdays due to reduced traffic, but I know not everybody can do weekdays.

I'll be able to go sometime on a weekday too, just not right away. Recovering from back surgery.

I heard the hardest part of Dickey Bell has an official bypass now, but I haven't been on the trail to see it yet.

Dutch John is my favorite, but it has a couple spots that can be rough. Seems like it's usually later in the year when that happens though. I guess after a whole season of vehicles chewing it up.

It does, it's like a full (shot) road, kinda like that other new trail from two years ago. I honestly think a standard car could drive it.

Last year things got rutted pretty bad, like I was making contact quite a bit throughout the trails. One time I came across some guys in a late '90s Blazer stuck in the creek crossing area at the base of the hill on Dutch. They weren't stuck in the creek, but trapped in the area because they couldn't get up either hill. They didn't want help and eventually got up one of the hills, but with a lot of beating on the vehicle, while I watched a full sized motorcycle struggle on the other hill. I guess I was trapped too since they both took about 20-30 min to clear out.

Tbh, I personally wouldn’t go with a group meet up unless it’s 3-4 of yall max. Problem is with groups, they always overbook and end up with 8+ rigs on a trail and it takes forever to get through the easiest of trails. With your setup, you shouldn’t have any issues with any of the trails except the front side of Daniel, backside, no problem.
I’d be down to show you the trails, but I’ll be out of town for a few more months. I’ve been wanting to take my TJ w/ 3” lift and 32’s to see how it handles.

Anyone interested in a Friday run? I’m due to break something and might as well have fun doing it

Are you talking Good Friday? I won't be able to do this Friday, but if you're saying you can do a random Friday, I can likely squeeze out one soon.

@kam04LJ I haven't forgotten about you, I keep getting loaded up with work mid-week lately. It seems like every Tuesday I think I'll be able to squeeze in a Friday trip to Uwharrie, then bam, work load. :sneaky:

Right now there is a good chance I can load up the kids for a few hours on Sunday 5/18 if anybody wants to ride. We usually get there 10-11 and ride/play for a few hours.

I agree! The huge groups going out there and holding the trails up on the weekend is annoying.

Friday anyone? I’m free after 11am.

Or any day this weekend (but I imagine the weekend is going to be packed?

I can't make it, but I was there this past Sunday, dusty as ever. I passed a few Jeeps, but there was a ton of Toyotas roaming and clogging up the trails, most of them were newer 4Runners.

A few weeks ago I was there and came across a group from Florida who got this Ranger tangled up on the face of Daniel. You can't see it in my zoomed in pic, but he was centered on a rock and had his front left tire off the ground too, and was close to rolling down. The Jeep behind him here started winching him backwards toward a tree, but they were moving slow, so I didn't hang around to see the outcome.

Damn, I must have left right as you got there. I left right after they got the line out. This is me, if you see me out there, just holler at me.
