Please Tell Me all you can about these RIMS

I have the 5 original rims, That came with my Jeep (previous owner saved them)
I know NNnuuuthin about the rims
slightly rusted, I do know i can restore them, been there done that before on an old ford twuk

seeing as im going from a 4inch lift to stock height
whats the tallest metric?/30-31 size tire i can stuff under my jeep im looking for good gas mileage and a nice ride
AND very good in snow NOT looking for 200+ dollar tires im looking for less expensive but good tires
automatic with 3.75 rear
I do NOT want to go to the size tires that are on the rims now i think there 28's little buggers

Those are 28’s and 15x7 wheels. You can easily run 31x10.5R15 if you wanted, but I like 30x9.5R15 better on a stock rig. 235/75R15 would be a 29.5” choice that would also work well. Lot more tire options in that one.

No, I mean 235/75R15 has a lot more tire options than 30x9.5 (or 31x10.5).

They don't really have a name for them, they are just 15x7 steel wheels.

would i need wheel spacers with 31x10.50 tires?

You would need to adjust the steering stops and the spare tire carrier.

i removed one of the bald tires
and measured from the back top of rim
with level for straight edge
from the bolt hole plate
I get 4 and one quarter inches

will this give me problems with a 30 or 31 inch tire ? other than adjusting the steering stops

Might be misreading it by an inch. Stock 7” wide wheels are all 5.25” backspacing. 8” wheels are 5.5” BS.

That info was copied from another forum and is incorrect. Trust me, 7” is 5.25” (+31.75mm offset) and 8” is 5.5” (+25.4mm offset).

The way the post lists them would have the 8” sticking out considerably vs the 7” which would be significantly behind the fender flare. They also wouldn’t use the same tailgate spare tire snubbers if they were the way that posts lists them.

The way I listed them has them sitting very close to the same stance, which is how they are in person.

Question regarding TJ’s that rolled out with 215 or 225 tyres from the factory -

Does 30x9.5r15 on 15x6 SE steel wheel or 15x7 OEM alloy wheel mounts easily on factory stock spare wheel carrier? Or does it need any spacers? I know 235/75/15 mounts very tight.

Both wheels in question are attached below -

TJs with the 15x6 steel wheel use the thin spare tire bumpers (1.22”) and the 15x7 and 15x8 wheels use the medium thickness (1.62”) bumpers. 15x8 wheels only came with 30x9.5 and 15x7 only came with 215 or 225 stock, and the 1.62 bumpers work for all of those combos.

I have tried 30x9.5 on 15x7 and it is too tight for the 1.62” bumpers, and not tight enough on 1.22”. Honestly it’s pretty awkward. I imagine if you put the same tire in a 15x6 wheel, you would want to use the 1.22” bumpers but then that would also be too tight. The problem is the 30x9.5 works fine on the 15x8 wheel because it’s spread out more and the sidewalls are flatter. The 15x7 creates too much tire bulge

The 1.22” bumpers are already pretty tight with a 215 or 225 tire on the 15x6. Going up to a 9.50” wide tire is a big change.

Might be better off taking some 1.62s and trimming them slightly, and if you use the 15x6, get some 1.22s and trim them. Or trim whatever it is you have stock.

235s and 30x9.5 will have about the same problem, as they are very similar thickness.

Or you can add spacers to the bolt shafts on the carrier - this is what I did for 31x10.5:

The nuts alone didn't seem to relieve the tension quite enough, so I added thick lock washers as well.

Thanks for the detailed response. Mine came with 15x7 alloys and 225 tyres from the factory so assuming I got the mid size bumpers. I have now switched to 15x6 steelies and most likely will go with 30x9.5, hence doing my homework 😃. I won’t mind 235’s but with 1.5 inch lift they might look out of place. Do you have the part number for 1.22 bumpers?

I currently have a 15x6 spare with the thin bumpers. 225 is pretty tight on it, but like mentioned before, that’s stock, and so I know it’s correct. I don’t know how much spacing out you would need for a 30x9.5 but I would guess 3/16-1/4”.

It’s hard to say about other tires because mine has the original poly spare temporary use tire on it which is a very oddly shaped tire, it bulges a lot and has a weird tread. I’m not sure how fitment would be with a normal 225 tire, so hard to say what going from a normal 225 to a 235 or 9.50 would require exactly.

You’re definitely going to want to space the wheel out some, or else you will probably bend the tailgate over time with the lug nuts snug. I’d maybe try a 1/4” spacer. That will put it about right for the added section width.

Also be prepared to deal with rubbing, pretty sure 30’s on those wheels will hit on control arms or sway bar or something. I don’t recall exactly.

Just FYI, 55008263 is the original part number for the thinner bumpers. The parts catalog is not helpful at all for this, but I have found that 15x6 wheels seem to always use these bumpers. I tried to mount mine with the 1.62” bumpers and the wheel was nowhere close to mounting properly unless I tightened it so much it would bend the tailgate.

Thanks a ton. So all 3 bumper use the same part number? I thought the bottom most is slightly taller then the rest.

Maybe things have changed, I’m not sure. The parts catalogs are not very helpful. The TJ parts manuals don’t even mention the thinner bumpers at all. I had to get that part number out of the YJ catalog. YJ and TJ use the same tire carrier thickness so the bumpers always work with the same wheels between YJ and TJ, which means the parts catalog into is relevant.

The YJ used 4 bumpers, all on the tailgate. Early TJ had 5…the same 4 as the YJ on the tailgate, plus one additional down on the bottom on the tub panel below the tailgate. Then the later TJ, I think maybe 01-06? switched to 3 bumpers. I’m not sure if the later years with 3 bumpers had different thicknesses or not.

The parts catalogs list the following:

YJ:

1.22 - with compact spare
1.62 - with conventional spare
1.85 - with aluminum rim (this is false)

Compact spare is the 15x6 and those always got
The funky 225/75 poly spare temporary use tire. So they always used the thin bumpers.

1.62 was “conventional” because most YJs with 7” wheels (or 8” on the renegade) got a full size spare. So that would mean a 7” or 8” spare which needs the thicker bumper. Base models sometimes did get 7” main wheels paired with a compact spare. My YJ was like that, so it had the thin spare tire bumpers even though 7” stock wheels. Spare was the 6”. Kind of dumb because if you ever needed the spare, your normal wheel wouldn’t be very secure on the tailgate. Would probably want to stick it in the cab to carry it home if you had a flat.

No YJ ever got 1.85” bumpers, those are for TJ Rubicons with the 16x8s. It’s gotta be a misprint, because these catalogs were made electronically later on after the TJ was already out. I can not possibly think of any wheel and tire combo on a YJ that could use a bumper that thick.

Parts catalog info for TJ:

Early on (97-01) - parts catalogs totally skip the bumpers. It shows them on a diagram but it doesn’t assign them a part number at all. So technically 97-02 should have listed 55008263 (1.22”) and 55013350 (1.62”), but it didn’t for whatever reason. Must have missed it.

02 - only lists 55013350 (1.62”) - this makes sense because I believe the 15x6 wheel was discontinued by this point, and the Rubi was not out yet so only this size should have been needed for the year.

03 - only lists 55345519 (1.85”) this must be a typo, because while this part number was used for Rubis this year, there were plenty models still needing 1.62”.

04-06 - finally list both 55013350 and 55345519 (1.62 and 1.85”) - this makes sense for all trims. 1.62” for anything non-Rubi, and then the thicker 1.85” for Rubi.

I know I gave you way more info than you asked for there, but I feel it’s good to get the info out there. It took me forever to figure this out.

Chrysler/Daimler/Mercedes really gave up on making good manuals by 03ish. The 04 manual lists the two part numbers and says qty of 1 for each lol. So I can’t help with if you should have different thicknesses or not. I would assume all 3 are the same thickness, but I really don’t know. I am not familiar with the later TJs at all, I just know they switched to 3 bumpers.
