Will a 33 inch tire work on the factory spare tire carrier?

If I upgrade to 33's will they fit on the stock spare tire carrier in the back or will I need to get a new one to accomodate the 33's

It should fit.

The answer is, "It depends..."

The stock rear bumper may interfere with a 33 if you don't have a body lift. Also, what you need to do to properly support the tire with snubbers depends on the offset of the wheel the tire is on and the width of the tire (33x10.50, 33x12.50, 2885/75R16, etc.).

Or remove the rear bumper like I did. Not because of interference, but more for looks.

33s = yes, but also no.

I had mine riding like that for a while. Then one day I noticed the tire torquing/bending the door open while I was driving, so I switched to a heavier/stiffer hinge set with stock carrier. That lasted about a week before the now stiffened door hinge/mount lead to the stock tire mount cracking and about falling off.

Yes, but be careful that your rubber snubbers are pushing firmly against the tire or you'll live to regret it.

Interesting. The tires on my 2000 TJ were changed to 31x10.5R15's from the original 30x9.5R15's by a previous owner. However, they left the original sized spare on the tire carrier, which is kinda weird. But I notice this spare is at least an inch away from the snubbers so there's definitely no firm aren't pushing going on. You seem to indicate this is a problem. Should I be concerned?

You should be concerned if you hit any speed bumps or unpaved roads. Without the snubbers contacting the rubber tire very firmly the tire weight will bounce around on the tailgate and eventually destroy the entire tailgate.

Nothing is likely to happen if you stay on-road only, but if you ever go off-road (or even just bumpy, unpaved roads) you're asking for trouble.

Thank you Chris.

A 33" tire will work on a factory tire carrier, but it will not clear the stock rear bumper.

I have a 265 75R/16 tire on mine (almost 32") and it touches the rear bumper. Any bigger, and the bumper would stop the tailgate from closing.

I have 33s and I upgraded the stock hinges to Moryde heavy duty ones.
Even with those, I usually move the tire to the bed when off-roading.
