What did you do to / in your garage / shop today?

30%???? I only get 20s!

Once a quarter I get an email telling me that they miss me and send a 30% coupon with very few restrictions. Been buying from them since they were only mail order and only sold liquidated and overstock stuff. They sold a lot of name brand stuff back in the early days.

I’m going camping with the guys this Thurs. 4k elevation, 6” of snow and lows in the 20s predicted. I decided I needed a camp fire to keep warm. I built this out of scrap from around the shop.

I rent, so limited as to the space I have available and what I can do with it. That said, this is the first time I've had a garage since owning a home 15 years ago and I've been working at capitalizing on it.

For most of my hand tools, I've been working out of one of three Kennedy boxes. It dawned on me that I no longer need to do this for moving or space reasons, so I decided to snag a rolling chest to consolidate everything. The sizing of the drawers is very good and it adds a mobile work surface to the "shop" as well.

As much as I'd like to run a large air compressor for spraying, the HOA would surely burn me at the stake for it if I got one. But I've still been wanting an air source so picked up a quiet 2 gallon utility compressor.

Finally, thanks again to @B1Toad for the heads up on the QuickJack 25% off back on 02/25/2025. I had used these before but lost access to them a few years back, always wanted to get a set. The discount was enough to force my hand. Did some gypboard repairs, general cleanup and organization associated with getting them out of the way when not in use.

Harbor Freight recently had their parts bins on sale for under $6 per, so I picked up a few of them to replace the little bin drawers I have used for the last 20 years. I put together some storage shelves for them made mostly out of spare wood and crap I had laying around the garage. I will have two sets when I am finished that hold about twice the crap in 2/3 the space.

I had my QuickJacks set up like that for about a year, then thy fell off the wall onto my wife's new car. We heard a big crash in the middle of the night. walked around the house and could not find the cause. Went into the garage in the morning and found them on the floor with several new dents in her hood and bumper. The lag bolts tore right out of the studs. Let's just say she was not happy.

They live in a much more secure wall mount now.

Given what I know of the framing in these buildings, I have considered possibly using some kind of additional tie-back method. That said, mine aren't really hanging, or at least won't be. Most of the weight will be taken up by blocks underneath (I set the wall hooks up an additional 1.5" at the high end of the floor slope for this, note 2x chunk under left jack), the hooks are just keeping them from falling away from the wall.

I have several of the HF boxes along with Stack On boxes which are deeper. They work out great when I do repairs at my rentals. Plumbing job, bring out the plumbing boxes. I have boxes for electrical, lag screws, deck screws, nuts and bolts, regular pan head screws, and nails. Just grab and go. I like your storage tower. I’m going to have to build one. Right now I stack them on top of each other on a shelf and always need the one on the bottom of the stack.
