New Infotainment Radio Option (Looks Stock)

Ι see what you mean now. I do like that look. It really is nice. I prefer a reputable company to make one that fits that space like that. I’ve always liked Alpine.

I really want that 1.5 DIN one to be quality, but half the Amazon reviews are obviously fake/AI-generated and the other half are negative. I may go with one like red02tj showed now that I know it doesn’t interfere with the rest of the dash.

I was just checking out your car and found this thread. It looks like we have similar ideas as I also have bought this radio. Haha

I’ve got a JBL compo set in the standard holes in the dash. And 13 cm JBL in the sound bar.
Both on the internal amp of the radio.
Combined with an active under seat JBL subwoofer.

CarPlay works better and faster then on my wife’s 2023 BMW X3.

The sound is good. The fit is good and I really like the looks. Also like the fact not a lot of people will steal it as it only fits these cars and my car is open for 8 months a year.

Can’t really say anything negative about it.

Don’t know anything about durability as I only have it for 4 months but so far, so good.

I am really digging this one for some time. Cops are not very friendly here and certainly not very appreciative of the fact one holding the phone and talking while driving 😃. Besides bluetooth / hands free, I really need rear reversing camera due to the obvious safety reasons with tinted soft top windows 🤣. This radio definitely fits the bill 😎.

There’s one thing I think of now. You need to connect an external microphone. The internal on the radio is not very good for calls. But there’s a plug for an external microphone on the back.

Yes, I agree. Stock Mopar radio are the best looking and quality built but unfortunately times have changed and google maps and inbound / outbound calling on the fly can’t be avoided anymore.

"Times have changed" is your reasoning. But at the end of the day, you are still driving an old, outdated Jeep. No?

I will keep my stock Mopar CD/Cassette combo in my old Jeep and use my cellular phone for google maps and phone calls. Why pay for the same technology TWICE?

Yes but phone screens are small and not very safe to navigate or use it as handsfree device while driving plus I can’t hook up back up camera. People are way less carful nowadays walking into the parking lots / streets and not paying as much attention to the cars backing up which is a massive hazard. I drive my TJ mostly on the busy streets in town and genuinely think this one little upgrade besides adding some convenience will make me feel safe while driving.

My goal is to keep everything stock looking and save / store the Mopar radio from the collectors point of view. Otherwise I absolutely adore TJ’s for what they are and find them adequately modern. I really don’t need any other modern tech for my driving needs at least for now.

And I just like fancy stuff 😂

If people don’t like it, fine by me.
Keep your old radio.

I love this technology, CarPlay, rearview camera. Not that it really necessary, but if I should take all the parts of my jeep that are not necessary…. 😜

I agree with you, nothing wrong in keeping up with the technology especially that can be easily retrofitted without deviating from core design and feel. Convenience and safety parameters keeps changing with the time 😎. When TJ was designed I was not talking as frequently on the phones and simultaneously using navigation & changing or looking for songs on Spotify playlist while driving 🤔.

I remember back in the day it wasn’t a problem if you don’t pick up a call or reply back a little later, friends and family members used to have lot more patience 🤣. Nowadays it’s expected that you will pick up the phone almost immediately and more so most of the time phone calls are important and unavoidable too 🧐.

I'll keep my stock Mopar radio too. In fact, that was one criteria when I was shopping for the Jeep. Knob and pushbottons.

But I'm with @Zorba on this, no PHOOONNNE (probably misspelled again, but he'll correct me). I have a dash mount for a tablet or small laptop for my maps. And I'm messing with connecting a backup camera to it.

Love your profile picture, especially the license plate. Perfectly balanced stance 😎.

The beauty of the TJ (and similar) is that the vehicle wasn't built to be dependent on these additional systems and functions quite well without. As a result, YOU get to choose which tech you want to use and how it will be installed. Gotta like that. (y)

@OldBuzzard's LJ is looker, nice stock-ish appearance.

Six Os, 2 Ns - PHOOOOOONNE!! ;) :D

It woulda been peak audio tech back then.....

Indeed, but quickly died off shortly thereafter, being surpassed by the compact cassette tape, which was then superseded about a decade later by the compact disc.

Today, a fairly sizeable chunk of my music catalog lives in a 2"x0.5"x0.25" space and travels everywhere with the LJ on one of these...

No stretched tapes, scratched/skipping discs...that's tech I can live with. ;)

For the record, my LJ still retained its factory AM/FM/CD head unit when I purchased it. Had the CD player portion not been DOA, it's likely I would have kept the factory unit. I don't actually listen to music much when driving the Jeep.
