Stuck on highway at the moment with a smoking diff

This shows the importance of cleaning your ring gear and ring gear bolts really good before install as well as the need for red loctite.

Are they the ring gear bolts? Jeep was regeared when I got it so I'm not sure how everything went when they were originally installed

I prefer to clean both the male and female threads really well before red locktight to help achieve max "howl".

Where do I buy this “black” oil?

In the 70's / 80's you could buy this motor oil. it made used oil out of diesel look like lacquer thinner.

You're going to need to do more than look under your bearing caps. Remove the carrier and pinion so the bearings and everything else can be inspected. New ring gear bolts installed correctly are probably in order

Glad you got in ok. For real.

I have had similar drama out of town in one....no fun.

Do I drive it and lose a lot of money or have someone tow it and lose a lot of money.

Thanks man

Toronto rush hour is the suckiest time to break down.

Exactly that...would've trailered it but the wiring is screwed up rn. Didnt want to tow because, not sure what other places are like, but the tow trucks here are vultures...they'll do anything to screw you over and get your money. If they intrude on each others territories, they'll kill or burn each other's shops and trucks. Pretty ruthless

It's rediculous. My buddies dad broke down at the side of the highway and he had a tow truck trying to hook up in 10 minutes...he fixed the car and tried to get going but the tow truck backed up to his bumper and wouldn't let him merge. Followed him for quite a while...just animals

That is insane.

They do not look like ring gear bolts.

I'm guessing cover bolts, especially since it looks like an aftermarket cover. When I bought a Spicer cover, the number one bad thing the reviews mentioned was weak cover bolts supplied with the cover. Mine came with unmarked bolts, so I reused my OEM bolts to avoid any potential issues.
