Help please! I'm from the Isle of Man, we have no Jeep dealer here...

I have a UK import 2005 4 litre Manual Petrol Wrangler TJ Renegade special edition. We've had a spot of coldish weather & my Jeep won't start after not using him for a couple days. Turn ignition, panel lights up, turn to start (clutch in), nothing happens. No click, no sound at all, headlights don't dim. I tried both main & spare keys.

Local garage came out as they thought it was the battery - battery is fine. They then took it in thinking it's the starter. (They now say) starter is fine & they can't do any more. Now they are telling me to get it to an electrical specialist as they say it's the immobilizer. It's not yet at the specialist, but the specialist has told me that if it is the immobilizer - they can't fix it! The joys of living on an Island!

So... what happens exactly if the immobiliser fails? From reading this forum it seems that the engine turns then dies? If so, this is not the symptoms.

My thinking after spending an hour on here reading, is that it could be whatever is sensing the clutch. Thinking back, if I try to start the engine without the clutch depressed, these are the same symptoms. Is that right? How does depressing the clutch control the engine start?

I've been 100,000 miles in my Jeep, I'd LOVE to have him back working!

Which engine do you have and what do your keys look like? Are they thick or thin? Do the dash lights and seat belt buzzer come on?

What color is your key? If it is black, no immobilizer. Also, put it in 4 low and see if it starts, I think it is supposed to over ride the clutch switch in 4 low ( still push clutch in or have transmission in nuetral so it doesn't move).

Thanks, I will check that. The key is grey.

I have a 4litre petrol engine. The keys are grey & fairly thin. I have attached a photo. The dash lights come, I will check the seat belt buzzer. Certainly the buzzer that I have the door open with the key in the ignition comes on.

Excellent help & advice guys thank you! I've been awake all night worrying about my Jeep & now I'm feeling that there is a chance to fix him! I will visit my Jeep at the service garage & try out a few of the suggestions.

I don’t know that that is you problem. You can take out the lock cylinder out and use a screw driver to turn that switch to see what it does. Keep the factory key right next the the ignition when you take the lock cylinder out. There is a page on the forum with the links to the factory service manuals. To pull the lock cylinder pit your key in turn one click and the is a small push button release on the bottom of the steering column the can be depressed with a small crew driver. That will give you access to the switch. But you need to keep you century key close to the key sensor to start it still.

If headlight turns on, what about if you bypass the clutch?
Open your fuse box and insert a fuse at the bypass slot.
We do that when we go off roading. It could be just your clutch switch.

I am visiting the garage that has the car this afternoon. I'm thinking of getting Jeepy recovered back to my house as the garage people don't seem to know what they are doing & it's difficult for me to try out fixes. I will try the L-4 option this afternoon at the garage as my neighbour has to give me a life to get there.

Can you explain please about the bypass slot & the clutch switch?

Your symptoms mentioned above is what I was trying to explain about the "maybe it's just a malfunctioning clutch switch".

Bypass it first through the fuse box, and when you start the rig, do not depress the clutch. Start it like you start a normal car.
